Why Not Try a Dummy Camera?

Dummy Cameras

Surveillance Product Photos 130

A dummy or fake camera is an affordable way to deter a would be criminal.  Ranging in price from as low as $11.00 to $26.00, this is a good alternative if you cannot afford a surveillance system right away.

Install one or two outside your home, in or outside your office or store or in open parking lot areas and criminals will think twice before preceding.  Some of these dummy cameras contain a flashing red LED light which draws extra attention to the camera, particularly at night.

These fake cameras are very realistic looking and even have real video cables.  Your neighbors or office staff will not even know the difference.  I highly recommend getting one with the flashing LED light, they seem more realistic.

Should a crime occur, these dummy cameras won’t be of any help.  But if budget is a problem, start out with one of these and put aside a new budget for actual working surveillance cameras.

Fun Uses for Hidden Cameras

Fun Uses for Hidden Cameras

There are many reasons people may want to use a hidden camera:

*  Illegal and immoral reasons that we won’t go into here.
*  Keep your home and business safe and to make sure everyone stays honest.
*  Keep an eye on your children when you are not able to be around.
*  Keep an eye on your pets to see what they are really doing while you are at work.
*  Watching and learning from nature.

We are going to talk about the last reason, “Watching and learning from nature”.  Lily, a three year old black bear from Minnesota is a recent “hidden camera” star.  She is being watched by camera from both wildlife experts and the general public.  Biologists were able to get a camera installed in the bears den to document both an upcoming birth and the actions of a bear during hibernation.  Contrary to popular belief, bears don’t really sleep the entire hibernation period.  This was documented on the video.  View the article and live stream here:

Scientists are always finding ways to observe animals in the wild without being present to disturb the animals natural reactions.  Here is a video clip of some rare sumatran tigers that were taped in the wild.

Wild Sumatran Tigers

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my!  There are many interesting things to learn from wild animals in their natural habitat.  I’ve seen wolves on video, lions on hunt for their prey, and birds in their nests caring for their young.  You may not have these wild animals running around your neighborhood, although I’m sure you can get some pretty funny videos of birds and squirrels going about their every day business.

YES, THERE IS HIDDEN CAMERA ABUSE

Surveillance Product Photos 157Hidden Camera Abuse

Hidden cameras have a lot of good uses, but unfortunately, some prefer to use them the wrong way.  As with anything, you should always do the right thing.  I think most of us know what the right thing is and therefore should also know when it is wrong.

There is a recent story about a man putting a hidden camera in his EX wife’s closet.  Well, it’s not his wife anymore, so I don’t see where the justification in that came from.  I can’t imagine the courts will see the justification either.  Here is a link to that story:  HIDDEN CAMERA IN EX-WIFES CLOSET

The news is always littered with stories of people using hidden cameras inappropriately.  Putting them in women’s bathrooms, lockers and such.  That’s just inappropriate and is an invasion of privacy.  So just don’t do it!

Quite frankly, I think placing hidden cameras in the workplace can be wrong if kept a secret.  Why not just put a surveillance camera out in plain site?  (Ok, then the employees would know what areas to avoid).  Better yet, let the employees know you have hidden cameras throughout the building.  That should pretty much guarantee that your honest employees will stay honest.

If you think someone may be recording you inappropriately, fight back!  You can purchase a frequency bug detector that picks up the frequency waves put off by audio and video  equipment.  Check out some of the available BUG DETECTORS here.

It all comes back to the Golden Rule – Do unto others as you would have done unto you!  Think about it!  ZapSpyTech.com

I Don’t Want to be Caught on Hidden Camera!

January 20, 2010
Author: Tammy Chantall @ 8:48 pm

The hidden camera has many great uses! We hear about the teacher who was caught on hidden camera stealing prescription drugs from the students who keep their medications at the nurse’s station. http://www.timesnews.net/article.php?id=9019724

What about the politician caught on hidden camera taking bribe money? She was arrested in 2008 after being caught on hidden camera allegedly stuffing a $10,000 bribe into her bra. http://news.bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20100109dianne_wilkerson_hasnt_kept_up_deal_on_ag_martha_coakleys_watch/

And of course, the gas station that caught thieves on hidden cameras stealing thousands of gallons of fuel. http://www.news-record.com/content/2010/01/13/article/gas_station_owner_uses_camera_to_fight_back_against_theft

Well, what if YOU don’t want to be caught on hidden camera? Not that you are doing anything wrong or illegal of course. Unfortunately, there are many people out there that use hidden cameras for harmful and illegal reasons.

You do have options to detect such hidden surveillance of both video and audio devices. If you think that someone is listening to your conversations or is watching you with a hidden camera, a bug detector will help you find the hidden microphone or camera and a frequency detector will tell you what frequency it’s running on.

Surveillance Product Photos 104

Bug detectors act as sweepers, you can turn them on and walk through a room. If any frequencies are detected the bug detector will notify you.

Depending on the type of frequency detector, you must be within one to ten feet of a wireless device before it can determine the frequency.

When searching your home or office for bugs be sure to search everywhere. Bugs come in many shapes and sizes some being smaller than a penny.

These detectors are small and compact and can be carried in your pocket or purse for a quick sweeps of any area where you believe hidden cameras or microphones could be set up, including public restrooms, hotels, car, dressing rooms and gyms.

Be ahead of the game! If you have any suspicions whatsoever, you need one of these detectors.

How To Mark Your Valuable Electronics

January 13, 2010
Author: Tammy Chantall @ 3:06 pm

Marking your valuable electronics is one of the most simple and effective ways of protecting your possessions.

Valuable Electronics

Valuable Electronics

• For a start, property marking puts burglars off because it let’s others know that the item has been stolen, making it much more difficult to sell. The other big advantage is that it makes tracing and returning your stolen property a lot easier for police.
• The Metropolitan police say that there are two main types of property marking: the first is known as permanent marking, when you engrave or “punch” your property with your street number and postcode. Inexpensive permanent marking kits can be bought from most DIY stores.
• Make sure you engrave with a fine drill or sharp-pointed tool, and use a template or stencil to keep it neat and tidy. Punching is a form of permanent marking that is done with a hammer and a set of punches bearing numbers and letters. This method is better for bicycles, mowers, engines or other sturdy metal objects, but don’t use this on aluminum as it’s easily damaged. Of course, you could just improvise and scratch your street code and postcode on it with a sharp object, depending on how happy you expect to be with the final appearance.

Invisible Protection

• Invisible marking is the other method of marking your valuable electronics. This is best for antiques or valuable property that would lose value if spoiled by permanent marking. Police usually check stolen property with a special ultra-violet lamp, so an ultra-violet (UV) marker pen should be used. Just as for permanent marking, use your postcode and mark again if you move. The police also say that it is important to remember that UV marking fades and will need to be renewed every so often.
• Most police forces run programs that allow you to borrow an UV or ceramic marker, and you can buy them at most DIY stores. However, in some cases, chemicals can be used to remove invisible marking, and as it fades quickly, you should remember to regularly update your markings.
• Although you can’t see it with the naked eye, invisible marking can still be a deterrent to burglars, but you must let them know you’ve done it by using stickers from the police saying, “property in this home has been marked”. Contact your local police for more details about this.
• When it comes to deciding which items to mark, think about what you value most and what might be attractive to thieves. The truth is almost anything can be a target for theft, so why not mark everything?
• It’s worth keeping a property list or inventory of all your electronis and household possessions, and be sure to mark the things that you own as you compile your list.
• Finally, where your property is marked is important, especially if engraving or punching. The chances are you’ll want to keep the mark out of site, so try marking underneath or around the back of the item. The most important thing to remember is to choose a surface that can not be removed without spoiling the basic appearance or performance of the item. If thieves can not remove your mark without breaking your property, then it’s worthless and they probably won’t want it.

Surveillance Camera Catches Car Burglar

January 8, 2010
Author: Tammy Chantall @ 1:14 pm

A woman in New Port Richey, FL installed a Surveillance camera after having her car and garage broke into while she was home!  The surveillance camera actually captured two individuals trying to break into her truck again.  The police are investigating the case and will hopefully be able to capture the perpetrators with the help of the video footage caught by the surveillance camera.

Check out the news video here:  Car Burglary caught on tape

On a personal note, I had a car stolen from an apartment complex parking lot.  I was visiting my son and had just got in town from a 12 hour drive.  I parked the car and went inside to see my son.  In less than one hour, my car was gone and all the items I still had in there.  There was a drum set that I was bringing to my son, my GPS, mp3 player, electric guitar and other musical accessories – ALL GONE and no sight of the car!

We called the police and got a police report.  The next day I went on the internet to research the crime in the immediate area, and what do you think I found?  Two other cars had been stolen from the apartment complex in the last 60 days!  Well,  lesson number 1 was to make sure I checked the crime report for the area next time my son moved.  As a real estate agent, I should have done this as I always recommended it to clients who were unsure about the safety of a particular neighborhood.

The good/bad news is that the police found the car abandoned about 3 weeks later.  Of course, nothing was left in the car and there was damage to both the body and engine.  We ended up scraping the car for junk.

Fortunately, there are many camera products out there that can record the thieves and hopefully lead to an arrest.  A surveillance camera connected to your home can point cameras to not only your parked vehicle, but to the door and window entries of your home where predators like to break in.

There are also cameras you can put into your car, like this rearview mirror camera shown below.  This mirror snaps over your existing rearview mirror.  It has two cameras, one which is a rear view and the other can be rotated 330 degrees to capture whatever camera position you desire.  To view this camera and a short video demonstration, click on the picture below.

What do I need to know about Hidden Cameras?

December 28, 2009
Author: Tammy Chantall @ 12:10 pm

Before forking out your money for a hidden camera, there are a few questions you need answered! Here are some important, commonly asked questions and answers:

Hidden Cameras

Hidden Cameras

1. Why is there not audio on these hidden cameras?

Title 18, Section 2512 of the United States federal laws say that audio should not be used in a surreptitious manner. Surreptitious means to “snatch secretly”. Audio in hidden cameras are currently only available to law enforcement agencies. If you want to read the law in detail, check it out: Title 18, Section 2512

2. What’s the difference between a wired and wireless camera?

The wired camera has a video cable line that runs from the camera to your recording device or viewing device. A wireless camera will have a built in transmitter that sends the video signal to the receiver. The standard wireless hidden cameras can transmit up to 1,000 feet while the high-powered wireless hidden cameras can transmit up to 2.500 feet.

3. How do these hidden surveillance cameras work?

A small “board camera” is built into an everyday device, such as a radio, clock, mirror, lamp and so forth. The hidden camera can be either wired or wireless, sending a signal to a receiver that is connected to a DVR. These can be hidden in a wall up to two feet thick.

4. Is there anything that can interfere with the wireless camera transmission?

Cordless phones that operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency can cause interference with a 2.4 GHz camera, although interference should be minimal and usually only occurs if the cordless phone is between the camera and receiver. Some wireless internets, networks and WiFi can cause interference. Also, excessive amount of metal in the walls if your device is hidden can be a factor.

5. What does 2.4 GHz wireless frequency mean?

A frequency is required to transmit a signal, 2.4 GHz is the specific wireless frequency that transmitters use to send video signal to a receiver. This range varies between 200 and 700 feet depending upon your specific environmental conditions.

6. Are there any temperature limitations to operating these cameras?

It is safe to store cameras between -22 and 158 degrees fahrenheit (-30 to 70 degrees celsius)
Black and white cameras operate best between -10 and 122 degrees fahrenheit (-23 to 50 degrees celsius)
Color cameras operate best between -10 and 104 degrees fahrenheit (-23 to 40 degrees celsius)

Commercial Business Burglary

December 12, 2009
Author: Tammy Chantall @ 1:02 pm

Ninety per cent of burglary prevention is physical security. If your complex is locked up and unauthorized entry is made difficult, time consuming, noisy and visible, chances of a successful burglary are kept to a minimum. The burglar will pass up your business and look for an easier target.

Burglar

PREVENTION

LOCKS on all outside entrances and inside security doors should be double cylinder deadbolts with moveable collars. The deadbolt should have at least one inch throw containing a hardened steel insert and protected by a latch guard.

PADLOCKS should be of hardened steel, mounted on bolted hasps and always locked to prevent exchange. Serial numbers should be filed off to prevent new keys from being made.

DOORS (all outside or security doors) should be of solid construction, metal lined and secured with heavy metal crossbars. Jams around doors must be solid. All exposed hinges should be pinned to prevent removal.

WINDOWS should have secure locks. Burglar-resistant glass treatments are also recommended. An example would be the installation of polyester security film. However, this must be used in conjunction with the alarm’s glass break sensor. Heavy metal grates may be used on windows of high vulnerability (such as rear windows). Check with the Fire Marshall for safety requirements.

LIGHTS must provide optimum visibility, both inside and out, with those outside having vandal-proof covers over the lights and power source. Entire perimeter must be well lit, especially the area around doors and other possible entry points.

ALARM SYSTEM should be supplied by a licensed alarm company with a central monitoring station. Check the alarm system on a daily basis, and advertise its presence to deter break-ins.

CASH REGISTER should be kept in plain view from outside the building so it can be easily monitored and should be left open when empty and not in use.

SAFE should be fire proof, burglar resistant, anchored securely and in plain view. Leave it open when it is empty, and use it to lock up valuables when business is closed. Change the combination whenever someone with access to it leaves your employment.

BUILDING EXTERIOR should be checked including the roof, cellar and walls. Secure all openings.

MAINTAIN GOOD VISIBILITY by not allowing landscaping, boxes, trash bins, vehicles or equipment near building where they might provide concealment or access to the roof.

PERIMETER FENCES need to be adequate enough to keep intruders out, and at the same time allow good visibility of your business by neighbors and police (i.e. vertical iron bar fence or 1/8 inch mesh vinyl coated chain link).

KEY CONTROL should be done in a responsible manner. A master key system where one key opens all locks may be convenient, but it may not be the best for security. Code all keys, keep them locked up when not in use, and do not allow employees to leave them lying around or make duplicates. Change locks whenever you suspect key security has been jeopardized.

Check out our line of Surveillance Products!

ID NUMBERS should be marked on all equipment and stickers (such as Operation ID) should be displayed to make this plainly evident to would-be thieves. The best number to use is your personal Florida driver’s license number. Also keeping a record of serial numbers on all equipment may help in recovery.
